Art choreographing our connection in South Korea
'Making space' is something that I am keen to do and achieve more often. Earlier this year I was able to go deep into the earth in Cappadocia underground cities. This gave rise to a series of paintings, and 'The Fire Within' shown here has been selected to be in the 'Memory & History' exhibition in the 4th Gwangju International Women Art's Festival at the Asia Cultural Centre.
Deep inside our memory we may remember a time when we as humans were more connected to the natural world. In today's techno dominated world I feel we need to Re-connect whether it's going into a cave, a walk in the woods or a swim in the ocean. I was last in South Korea in 2016 for the 3rd Gwangju International Women Art's Festival held at the Folk Museum alongside the Gwangju Biennale. I gave a paper then entitled 'Taking Time to Listen' at the conference moderated by Kim Heokyung with keynote speech by Professor Kim Jihee.
I am delighted that as a result of this I have this year been invited to speak at Chonnam University International Exchange Unit where I shall be speaking about Art and Choreographing our connection to the natural world as well as exhibiting. Speaking of connection human connection we witnessed worldwide in the reunions of South and North Koreans families was I think 'heartfelt' by us around the planet.
