Over the summer lion cub dragon heart was displayed in the window of Sheffield Hallam University Langsett building on Howard Street admired by passers by on the slope down to Sheffield Railway Station and Showroom Cinema. However there was a roar for all lion cubs, lionesses and lions to join their pride at a grand gathering in Meadowhall's yellow car park for an exhibition with the entrance fee continuing to raise funds for Sheffield Children's hospital charity. Dragon heart stood proud with fellow cubs under a special marquee, although Dragon Heart could have withstood the outdoors as after many layers of acrylic paint I sealed him in several layers of yacht varnish. The lions and lionesses were on display outside.
Big thanks for Sarah Ng, Chair of Sheffield Chinese Community Centre for taking the initiative to say yes to us raising the funds to adopt the lion cub sculpture and asking me to paint it. Thanks to all the community for their thoughts and ideas of what should be painted on him. It was great fun painting him from sunrise before work and after work until sunset over 2 weeks. The varnish took days to dry but was worth it to give him a lovely glossy coat. The most important thing is it raised vital funds for Sheffield Children's hospital, and it brought various communities together. It was beautiful to see the whole pride in one place with such a vibrant variety of colours and designs.
Dragon Heart was the name that came through as I was painting him and that he was male. Painted wearing a traditional chinese child's jacket he combined the dragon spirit of Sheffield with a silver steel dragon on his coat.
